Organic vapours are compounds primarily derived from fossil fuels such as oil or coal. For example, solvents or petrol release organic vapours. For protection when using or cleaning with organic solvents e.g. toluene, xylene and MEK. Also degreasing, mixing, using paint thinners, lacquers and glues. For paint and pesticide spraying, a particulate filter must be used to capture mist droplets (5925) with a 501 filter retainer. How long will cartridges and filters last on the shelf and in use? Stored unopened in the original packaging, 3M cartridges and filters will last five years. Once removed from their packaging, replace them after six months. The service life of cartridges and filters depends on a number of factors including the type and number of contaminants in the air, the breathing rate of the wearer, ventilation, humidity and respirator storage. Gas and vapour cartridges must be changed when contamination can be detected coming through cartridge by smell or taste. Particulate filters must be changed when breathing resistance increases and becomes uncomfortable. What happens if I do not use a particulate filter with my cartridges? The particulate filter removes the tiny droplets or particles in the air (eg. Mists from spray painting). Cartridges do not filter these particles, if no particulate filter is used, they could be breathed in.
